Rock and Roll Royalty

There is probably no better way to define the hierarchy in the music world than the bestowment of honorary titles. The titles of Rock Royalty run the gamut of the typical courtyard cognomen, and while most are well deserved, undisputed, acknowledgement for lifetime achievement, some are lightly bestowed and hotly contested. We won't make any judgmental decisions about which is which or who is who in this section. It is merely a list of the current "title " holder(s), and the contender(s). As usual A/8 welcomes "Opinions, Snide Remarks, Rants, Raves", and any votes you wan to cast for the contended titles. Send 'em Here.

On record, he made spine-tingling rock and roll. His frantically charged piano playing and raspy, shouted vocals on such classics as "Tutti Frutti", "Long Tall Sally" and "Good Golly, Miss Molly" defined the dynamic sound of rock and roll." Wilson Pickett said, "Little Richard is the architect of Rock 'n' Roll", and no one can dispute that fact.

Detractors suggest that Whiteman's ornately-orchestrated music was jazz in name only, lacking the genre's improvisational and emotional depth. Defenders note that Whiteman fondness for jazz was genuine, that his bands included many of the era's most esteemed white jazz musicians, and argue that Whiteman's groups handled jazz admirably as part of a larger repertoire. In his autobiography, Duke Ellington declared, "Paul Whiteman was known as the King of Jazz, and no one as yet has come near carrying that title with more certainty and dignity."

Dusty Springfield

White Queen of Soul - Dusty Springfield

Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien OBE (16 April 1939 – 2 March 1999), known as Dusty Springfield, was a pop singer and entertainer. Of all the female British pop artists of the 1960s, she made one of the biggest impressions on the U.S. market. Owing to her distinctive sensual sound, she was one of the most notable white soul artists. A fan of American pop music, she campaigned to bring the little-known soul singers to a wider U.K. audience by devising and hosting the first British performances of the top-selling Motown Records artists in 1965. Dusty Springfield was voted the Top British Female Artist in the New Musical Express reader's poll in 1964, 1965, and 1968. She is an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the UK Music Hall of Fame. Springfield made one of the biggest impressions on the U.S. market, scoring 18 singles in the Billboard Hot 100 from 1964 to 1970. Following her frequent trips to the US, she took to the black American music of Motown and was dubbed the White Queen of Soul.
